PLA Conference: Recap, Hello Portland!

PLA stands for Public Library Association and they have an annual (excluding 2021 for the pandemic) conference in which librarians and library workers get together and nerd out over how to make public libraries better. There’s also the meeting of other librarians / library workers, hearing famous people speak, and (I guess?) the obtaining of swag. I don’t really know other than what I’ve seen on the website… This is my first time. This year’s conference is in Portland, Oregon and my library has sent me. I’m pretty excited!

This was in my drafts since 2023… So not new and I never finished it.

I’m also a bit flustered that I got the day I was supposed to travel wrong. The Conference starts Wednesday and I got here in the wee hours of Tuesday morning. Since I had so much to do for work, I ended up working from “home” in Portland. Eh, it’s a business trip.

I had an interesting taxi ride from the airport to my hotel with Lorenzo from Guadalajara. He started out the ride by having me type the address into his iPad. I was so tired, it was after midnight at that point, and it irritated me. When I handed it back to him, he said, “okay, 2 hours.” I about fell out of my seat! “What? It said…” and he started laughing. “Oh, you’re hilarious,” I said starting to laugh myself. “A real comedian.” Still giggling, he says, “nah, that’s my other job. I’m a comedian / stripper! So when people laugh at my stripping, I pretend it’s because of my jokes!” We both laughed. We spoke Spanish almost the whole ride. It was really nice and he was pretty funny.
